Think What You Will—Synchronized Skiing Is Actually Pretty Impressive

Picture
Picture

Friday, April 15, 2022

Think what you will - Synchronized skiing is actually pretty impressive. Call it off-beat, but that's literally the opposite of what synchronized skiing is.

On a recent warm and sunny Saturday at Aspen Mountain, the crowd on the deck of Bonnie’s restaurant hooted and hollered for the competitors coming down the North American run. Eight skiers at a time sped down the hill in choreographed formations, turning in unison and criss-crossing each other’s lines while a DJ spun a tune for each team, ranging from thumping techno to AC/DC. Picture a mash-up of high-performance short turns with a little Powder 8s and a dash of ’70s freestyle thrown in.

Instructors Excel at Aspen World Synchro Championships

The Aspen World Synchro Championships were held April 8 on Aspen Mountain, with dozens of instructors from around the world competing in the synchronized ski competition. According Jenny Williams, a board member of the Aspen Divas Team, the competition is, “The perfect way to close the winter season in the northern hemisphere. The championships expose international ski instructors to their elite peers, forcing them to perform to the highest technical level as a team.”

Spectators filled the deck at Bonnies Restaurant to watch the athletes compete on the same slope that was used for demonstrations at the 1968 Aspen Interski. The 50th anniversary of that landmark event was celebrated on the mountain and at a special event in town the evening of the April 7.

Thursday, April 5, 2018

A group of ski instructors who survived the 1960s will hold a reunion in Aspen this weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one their marquee events of the decade.
Ski pros from throughout Europe, Japan and North America converged in Aspen in April 1968 for the 8th International Ski Instructors Congress. The ski instructors get together every three years to show off their country's distinctive teaching technique at an event known as Interski.

The 1968 gathering was the only time it has ever been held in the U.S.
David "Scooter" LaCouter was a 24-year-old, top-notch skier who was among the 24 men and nine women the Professional Ski Instructors of America picked for the demonstration team at the 8th Interski. The group was essentially the best of the best. Ski instructors from throughout the country tried out to qualify.

Founded 20 years ago by Jerry Berg, Aspen Team Diva began as a way for women to empower women. While that's still the case, they also are one of the country's best showcases for synchronized skiing.

Every year since 2003, Aspen Team Diva has helped host the Aspen World Synchro Championships. This includes the 2017 competition, which concludes Sunday on Aspen Mountain.

"You get to know all these girls from different places," said Carolina Vivo, who has competed with Aspen Team Diva since 2014. "You can feel a huge sense of community and friendship — a huge support from an incredible group of women from all over the world."

KUSA - Synchro skiers with skill and heart

Picture

KUSA – Before the lifts open and Telluride’s slopes are shared, first tracks go to the skiers dressed in orange and blue who carve in sync.
“We’re the Telluride Ghostriders,” Kim Macken said, the enormous peak of Mount Wilson behind him. “We’re the reigning world champions.”
During last week’s practice session at Telluride Ski Resort, Macken and his teammates worked to fine-tune their routines. Each began the same way. Six skiers stood in formation, their ski tips pointed together in a snowplow position. Shayne Marion led the call from the lead position.

“Ghostriders!” He shouted. “Left! Right!” He yelled out, as his teammates put their skis parallel. “Push! Push!” The skiers used their poles to thrust themselves forward and started carving down the mountain in unison. Despite the icy conditions, the Ghostriders made synchronized skiing look easy as they crisscrossed down the hill. Like all good teams, this one is greater than the sum of its parts, but if you’re counting, the Aussies outnumber everyone.

The Aspen Times - Argentine snowboard team tries hand at synchronized competition

Seth Johns has a solid understanding of the Spanish language, and will use it when need be. Otherwise, he prefers to stick to his native tongue when conversing with the seven Argentine snowboarders who now call him coach.

"I speak English so I can be very clear and concise in my verbiage. And so they have to stop arguing and bickering and pay attention to what I'm saying," Johns said. "But it is very nice to be able to speak to them in their native tongue and they understand the majority of what I'm saying. When you are bridging cultural gaps, being able to speak the language is great."
